Handy Exhaust Tips

  • Short journeys are worst for an exhaust, as it doesn't heat up sufficiently to burn off water vapour from the engine - leading to faster corrosion.
  • Although most corrosion comes from the inside of an exhaust, during the winter, wash underneath the car to stop salt accumulating on the outside.
  • If you have a catalytic converter, this should be checked when the vehicle is serviced. Most 'cats' will need replacing at least once during a car's life

We can also supply and fit a comprehensive range of catalytic converters 'Cats', as they are called in the trade, are fitted to all new cars by law. Their purpose is to clean the emissions from the car engine, to remove harmful particles and carbon monoxide gas, so that the final gas from the exhaust pipe is predominantly carbon dioxide and water vapour. Emissions from vehicles are now a major part of the MOT test, and it is important that your engine and exhaust system is in good order, to prevent premature damage to the catalytic converter.

Brakes

Many people assume that when they need them, their brakes will be there for them. As with all moving parts on your car they are subject to wear and tear and brakes should be checked regularly, particularly if you are thinking of setting out on a long journey

Brakes pads are much less effective if they are allowed to wear thin and you can often hear when you have a problem. It is a simple and relatively cheap thing to put right and should be rectified immediately.

A squealing or grinding noise when braking.

Brakes juddering when applied.

If the vehicle pulls to one side when braking.

A grinding noise when the brakes are applied.

A grinding noise when the brakes are off.

A loss of efficiency during heavy braking or on a long descent.

A high hard brake pedal.

Rear wheels locking upon braking.

If you are experiencing any of the above brake symptoms don't wait until it's too late.

Wheel Alignment

We recommend a regular alignment check for reasons of safety and economy.

Safety first - A concentration of load on one edge of a tyre reduces its contact area with the road. Cars that pull to one side, especially when braking, are dangerous and unpleasant to drive.

Save money - Uneven tyre wear is expensive, because it stresses the suspension and steering components.

Wheel alignment is an important measure for preventing tyre and suspension wear. It costs very little compared to what it can save!
